Spring in the Arctic

The sun climbs higher each day, the frost eases, and the crisp, supportive snowfields invite you to ski and linger outdoors for longer. The bright light of spring winter and the wide-open fell landscapes make Kilpisjärvi a truly unique destination for anyone who wants to combine active outdoor adventures, tranquility, and the very best of northern nature.

March in Kilpisjärvi

March in Kilpisjärvi is still very much winter. Frost can tighten, and heavy snowfall is still common during the month. At the same time, the sun rises noticeably higher in the sky. During the day, its warmth can already be felt on your face, and temperatures climb, bringing a special kind of light and energy to spring winter.

In March, you can ski along groomed cross-country tracks in Kilpisjärvi. Trails are opened from the Hiking Center to the Three-Country Cairn, across the ice of Lake Kilpisjärvi to the village centre, around Salmivaara, to Tsahkaljärvi, and around Saana Fell. The snowpack also begins to carry well for backcountry skiers, and conditions for fell skiing are excellent.

The Northern Lights are often active in March, and thanks to dark nights and clear skies, the month is an outstanding time for aurora spotting in Kilpisjärvi’s open fell landscapes.

Both March and April are popular months for ski expeditions to Halti and across into Sweden and Norway. International visitors often favour March for its aurora-filled nights, while Finns especially appreciate the warmth and light of April.

April in Kilpisjärvi

April is a celebration of light in Kilpisjärvi. The sun begins to warm in earnest, and sunscreen becomes an essential companion outdoors. Days are spent skiing in light conditions, enjoying the brightness and scenery, and taking breaks on the first snow-free patches while sitting in the sun. The era of deep frost is over.

For many, April’s spring snowfields are the reason to return to Kilpisjärvi year after year. A firm snowpack, brilliant light, and wide-open fell landscapes make skiing here a pleasure – movement is effortless and the views open in every direction. At the peak of snow-bearing conditions, you can walk on the snow, ski with backcountry or cross-country skis, or go snowshoeing without sinking in.

You can rent equipment for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing from us; our rental shop also offers OAC skin-based skis. In April, the days lengthen at an astonishing pace. By the end of the month, nights are already nearly bright, and long ski days stretch far into the evening. Moving through sunlit fells is at its absolute best in April.

May in Kilpisjärvi

In May, the village of Kilpisjärvi begins to quiet down – but not before the liveliest weekend of spring, when the Vain kaksi kalaa ice fishing event gathers people on the ice of Lake Kilpisjärvi. This three-day celebration is usually held on the first weekend of May.

In some years, the very best skiing conditions occur in May, although predicting conditions has become increasingly difficult. Spring can advance rapidly, and the weather may change in a short time. Toward the end of May, snow begins to disappear from the village area, even though winter may still linger in the fells. Rising daytime temperatures and softening snow often make travel in the terrain more challenging, marking the beginning of the village’s quietest period. This calm phase lasts until early June, when summer visitors gradually arrive and Kilpisjärvi awakens to a new season.
