Kilpisjärvi is Finland’s only true mountain village, located at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level. The weather is typical for a fell region and can change quickly. Winters are cool but often milder than in lower-lying parts of Lapland due to the elevation. Wind is common year-round. In summer, temperatures can rise well above 20°C, yet almost every summer also brings at least one sleet shower.

You can read the Tsahkaljärvi hiking story via the link. Families can also visit Saana, and for smaller children, carrier backpacks are available for rent at Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus. The summit of Salmivaara is another great family-friendly viewpoint with stunning scenery toward Saana, Norway, and Sweden.

Nature, Animals & Hiking

1. Where can I see reindeer in Kilpisjärvi?
It depends on the season. In summer and early autumn, reindeer often roam right through the village, and you can easily spot them along hiking trails and around yards. In winter, reindeer graze farther out in the wilderness, in which case we warmly recommend a visit to the Tornensis reindeer farm near the village center.

2. Saana Fell is Finland’s most iconic mountain profile and without a doubt Kilpisjärvi’s most famous landmark.
We have created a comprehensive guide to visiting the summit: The Saana Hiking Guide – Route, Gear & Tips. The guide answers questions such as “Where does the trail start?”, “How long does it take to reach the summit?”, and “Can I hike Saana with a dog?”—and much more.

3. What animals can I see in Kilpisjärvi?
Kilpisjärvi’s fell landscape is home to a rich variety of Arctic wildlife. Reindeer roam the area year-round, and you may encounter ptarmigans, mountain hares, foxes, and various tundra birds. The waters are home to trout and Arctic char, and the skies are often patrolled by eagles and other birds of prey.

4. Can I walk or drive to the Three-Country Cairn?
You can hike to the Three-Country Cairn from the Malla Strict Nature Reserve parking area; the distance is about 11 km one way. There is no road to the cairn. The trail passes through the nature reserve, and during the snow-free season you must stay on the marked path.
In summer, once Lake Kilpisjärvi has thawed, the Malla boat operates from our shore to Koltalahti. From Koltalahti, it is a 3 km walk to the cairn. You can return the same way by boat and on foot, or hike back to Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus along a 15 km trail. More information can be found here: Three-Country Cairn.

The Year in Kilpisjärvi

1. When is the best time to visit Kilpisjärvi?
Kilpisjärvi is a year-round destination, and the best time to visit depends on the kind of experiences you are looking for.
In winter, Kilpisjärvi is known for its reliable snow conditions, polar night, and Northern Lights. In spring (March–April), the days grow longer, the sun returns, and skiing conditions are at their best. Summer brings the Midnight Sun and outstanding hiking opportunities, while in autumn the fells glow in vibrant fall colors. Popular events include the Vain kaksi kalaa ice fishing competition and the Midsummer Skiing event.
The quietest months are May and October. Most hiking routes are usually accessible by Midsummer at the latest—often earlier in the village area. However, the trek to Halti is best scheduled for after Midsummer.

2. What can I do in Kilpisjärvi in winter?
In winter, Kilpisjärvi is a paradise for skiers and those seeking peace in nature. Popular winter activities include backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, Northern Lights watching, winter hikes and photography, ice fishing, and unhurried time outdoors. During the winter season, Kilpisjärvi offers a truly Arctic atmosphere and deep silence.
Ski tracks are maintained from late winter onwards, and a lit trail on the slopes of Salmivaara is groomed even in midwinter. Current trail conditions can be found on the Kilpisjärvi Latu website. Saana Fell can also be visited year-round—read more in Conquering Saana in Winter – Everything You Need to Know About Reaching the Summit in Snowy Conditions.

3. What can I do in Kilpisjärvi in summer?
Summer favorites include hiking Saana and the Malla Strict Nature Reserve, day trips to the Three-Country Cairn (by boat), fishing, experiencing the fell landscapes and the Midnight Sun, as well as photography and nature observation. In summer, nature in Kilpisjärvi is exceptionally easy to access: adventures begin right in the village, and many trails start practically from your doorstep.
Our Hiking Stories offer plenty of concrete examples of the area’s diverse outdoor opportunities. See also the pages Attractions and Activities.

The highlight of the summer is Midsummer Skiing, which will be held for the 81st time in 2026—an extraordinary event where summer and winter meet in the fells.

Norway

1. Do I need a passport to cross the border?
Citizens of the Nordic countries may travel freely between Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland without a passport. You can cross the border without travel documents, but it is recommended to carry proof of identity, such as an official ID card or another reliable document.

2. Can I take my pet on a day trip to Norway?
Yes, you can visit Norway with a pet for a day trip. Your pet must have a valid EU pet passport and a microchip. Before travelling, make sure all required vaccinations and documents are in order by consulting your veterinarian. As there is no pet boarding facility in Kilpisjärvi, it is wise to plan your movements with your pet in advance.

3. Can I pay with euros in Norway?
No. Most places accept card payments, but for example campsite showers often require cash, so it is useful to carry some Norwegian kroner. The easiest way to obtain kroner is to withdraw them from an ATM—the nearest one is at the Circle K service station in Skibotn.

4. What sights are there in the nearby areas of Norway?
There is plenty to see just across the border. On the drive to Skibotn, you descend from 500 meters above sea level down to the coast over a 50 km stretch, during which the landscape and vegetation change dramatically. The first popular sight is about 20 km from the border: the famous Rovijoki Waterfall, also known as “The Bridal Veil.”
Many excellent day-trip destinations are close by, such as the stunning Blåisvatnet lake and, for those accustomed to steeper climbs, Barras Fell (1,419 m) visible from the Kilpisjärvi end of the lake.

5. Where can I disinfect my fishing gear?
In Norway, fishing gear must be disinfected on many rivers—especially salmon rivers—before use in order to prevent the spread of the salmon parasite. In some areas, a disinfection certificate may be required to obtain a fishing permit. When fishing at sea or in waters where the parasite is not present, disinfection may not be mandatory.
Fishing permits and information about fishing in Norway can be found at inatur.no.

More details on river fishing in Northern Norway, permits, and disinfection points are available on the Visit Lyngenfjord website.

6. How can I get from Kilpisjärvi to Tromsø?
There is no year-round bus connection between Kilpisjärvi and Tromsø. Eskelinen Lapin Linjat operates the route from summer until the autumn foliage season, and The Arctic Route runs from December to the end of March. By car, you can reach Tromsø from Kilpisjärvi via Skibotn and Nordkjosbotn; the distance is approximately 160 km.
