Vain kaksi kalaa - Ice Fishing Contest
The three-day ice fishing event held annually in early May is the liveliest weekend of the year in Kilpisjärvi – a true spectacle. Many people come simply to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, while the luckiest participants also walk away with amazing prizes.
Event Location and Dates
Vain kaksi kalaa is Kilpisjärvi’s legendary ice fishing event, held every year in early May. In 2026, the competition takes place from May 1st to 3rd and is a three-day celebration.
The ice fishing competition is held on the frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi, right next to the village centre and small boat harbour. The event is famous for its relaxed atmosphere and spectacular prizes. And, as the name suggests, the catch itself is not everything. “Only Two Fish” perfectly captures the reality of the fishing days – which is why most of the prizes are raffled among all participants. It is well worth joining even if luck with fish is not on your side!
Caravan Gathering
The event attracts a large number of anglers and visitors who come simply to enjoy the unique atmosphere, and the village’s accommodation capacity is not enough for everyone. For this reason, during the event it is exceptionally possible to stay in your own caravan or motorhome in the village centre.
The event organiser provides basic services for caravanners: fresh water and chemical toilet emptying are available on site. The most enthusiastic participants arrive already early in the week and spend several days in the area before the actual competition days begin.
Stay at Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus
We are located about 5 kilometres from the event area, but getting there is easy: on each competition day, a free shuttle bus runs before and after the events between the Retkeilykeskus and the competition site.
At our campsite, no advance reservations are accepted for the ice fishing weekend – pitches are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Room and cabin accommodation, however, should be booked well in advance, as the event is extremely popular and fills up quickly.
