Ski in Finland’s most breathtaking landscapes!

Spring sunshine and endless snowfields. A white wilderness broken only by the tracks of your skis and the occasional fox trail. Once you experience Kilpisjärvi in late winter, you will find yourself returning to these glowing spring snowfields year after year.

In Kilpisjärvi, you ski in Finland’s only truly alpine landscapes, sheltered by the great fells of the Scandinavian Mountains. In spring, the area offers up to 40 kilometers of groomed ski tracks, and beyond them, limitless snowy plains where you can head out on backcountry skis and create your own trails. Whatever your style, the snowy fell world reveals its very best when explored on skis beneath the warm spring sun.

Backcountry Skiing

Kilpisjärvi has been a firm favorite among backcountry skiers for decades. Varied terrain, ski conditions that often last well into May, and some of Lapland’s most spectacular landscapes make Kilpisjärvi an unbeatable skiing destination. In winter, the best way to explore the surrounding wilderness is on backcountry skis. Compared to traditional cross-country skis, backcountry skis are wider and usually equipped with steel edges, which are essential when skiing on hard, sloping snow. The bindings allow your heel to lift freely, and the boots provide ankle support while being warmer than standard track-ski boots.

We rent backcountry skis and other equipment – learn more via our equipment rental page.

When heading out on a ski trip, always dress in layers and pack windproof and warm clothing for breaks. If you dream of seeing the views from the next fell summit and want to experience the freedom beyond groomed tracks, backcountry skiing is for you. We have also compiled a comprehensive information package about backcountry skiing in Kilpisjärvi in our hiking stories.

Groomed Ski Tracks

In spring, Kilpisjärvi offers around 40 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski tracks, most of which are suitable for both classic and skating styles. The network includes routes for all fitness levels – from flat lake tracks to the more demanding classic trail through the Malla Strict Nature Reserve.

The tracks are maintained from late February until early May. The most popular routes lead to the Three-Country Cairn and around Saana Fell. When staying at Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus, you can access these trails directly from our shoreline.

The tracks are maintained by Kilpisjärven Ladut ry, and you can find the latest trail conditions here.
