Fishing in Kilpisjärvi - In Search of Trophy Grayling

Whether you head out fly fishing on the Könkämäeno River or ice fishing for Arctic char at Lake Saanajärvi, our crystal-clear mountain waters offer anglers unforgettable experiences. The proximity of Norway adds yet another dimension – you can easily take a day trip to the Arctic Ocean to try your luck with sea trout.

Giant Arctic Char & Trophy Grayling

Most anglers come to the Käsivarsi region in pursuit of its legendary grayling, but the bright-bellied Arctic char of our crystal-clear waters and brown trout are equally prized catches. Atlantic salmon also ascend the Könkämäeno River, though not quite as far as Kilpisjärvi.

From Kilpisjärvi, it is easy to head out fishing in Norway as well, where the Arctic Ocean may reward you with a halibut weighing over 100 kilos or the highly valued sea trout.

Fishing Spots

Kilpisjärvi welcomes anglers of all ages, and fishing spots can be found for every taste. The whole family can enjoy an easy day trip to Lake Saanajärvi, and the beautiful border river Könkämäeno is accessible even by car.

Many of the most legendary fishing waters, however, lie deep in the wilderness beyond road access. To save time and effort, you can choose transportation to these remote spots by snowmobile in winter or by helicopter in summer.

Fishing Permits in the Käsivarsi Region

In addition to the national fisheries management fee (required for anglers aged 18–64), you always need a separate permit for fishing in flowing waters and in the wilderness lakes Luohtojärvi and Toskaljärvi. The easiest way to obtain permits is through Eräluvat.fi.

Relevant permit areas include:

  • Tornionjoki–Muonionjoki–Könkämäeno 2502
  • Käsivarsi–Tarvanto 1401
  • Lätäseno 1423

Ice fishing and angling in lakes (not in flowing waters), with the exception of Luohtojärvi and Toskaljärvi, do not require a permit.

Fishing Guides

On the waters of Kilpisjärvi and the Käsivarsi wilderness, a fishing guide makes your trip not only smoother but also more successful. Local guides know the best spots in the region’s rivers and lakes, as well as the most effective techniques for catching species such as grayling, Arctic char, and whitefish. They can take you directly to the right locations, saving both time and effort.

Guided services are designed for both beginners and experienced anglers, and trips are tailored to your skill level, making the experience safe and enjoyable. A fishing guide can also assist with permits, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: unforgettable fishing moments in the wilds of Lapland.

Fishing services in Kilpisjärvi are offered, for example, by Grayling Land and Wild Trail Waters.
