Salmivaara 595 m

Salmivaara (595 m) is a popular and easily accessible hiking destination right next to the village of Kilpisjärvi. It is one of the best places in the area to witness the changing seasons – from the twilight of the polar night to the returning spring light, from the Midnight Sun of summer to the glowing colours of autumn.

A Quick Climb to Stunning Views

Salmivaara’s greatest strengths are its easy accessibility and the openness of its views. From the summit, uninterrupted panoramas stretch in every direction, and the landscape transforms dramatically with the seasons. From this single spot, you can witness the return of light after the polar night, the rapid advance of spring, and the endless daylight of summer. The advantages of Salmivaara include:

  • Most often an easily accessible fell destination
  • Wide, open views in every direction
  • An excellent spot for observing light and the changing seasons

Starting point

Salmivaara is located close to the centre of the village of Kilpisjärvi. The trailhead is on Salmivaara Road, about 200 metres from the main road. Parking is available in a small roadside parking area. This destination is ideal for a short day hike or as part of a longer outdoor day.

Trail to Salmivaara

The trail to Salmivaara begins along an easy gravel path and continues as a steeper, rockier track toward the top. Despite this, the viewpoints are reached with relatively little effort—especially if you take your time on the ascent and pause to admire the scenery unfolding behind you. Photos and a more detailed description of the route can be found in our hiking story At Salmivaara at Sunset.

Who Is Salmivaara For?

  • Especially well suited in summer for first-time visitors to Kilpisjärvi and for families with children.
  • For photographers and for those who love admiring Saana’s iconic landscape.
  • For those who want to experience fell landscapes without committing to a long hike.

The short but steep final ascent is worth considering if your mobility is limited. In winter, there is often a packed track leading to the summit, which can be followed with snowshoes or even in winter boots. If no track is present, however, the route is not suitable for beginners.
