Saana (1,029 m above sea level) is Kilpisjärvi’s most iconic and impressive fell – a scenic landmark whose summit is a highlight of many journeys to Lapland. From its base, wide fell landscapes unfold, and from the top the views stretch far across the Käsivarsi Wilderness, to the fells of Norway and Sweden, and over the crystal-clear waters of Lake Kilpisjärvi.
Saana fell rises on the edge of the village of Kilpisjärvi in the Käsivarsi region of Lapland. Two marked trails lead to the summit and join above the tree line. The trailheads are located approximately 5 and 6 kilometres from the village centre toward Norway. Guests staying at Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus can begin their ascent directly from our yard, while for those arriving from elsewhere, the starting point is at the Malla Nature Reserve parking area. The marked route to the summit is about 4 kilometres round trip, with a similar distance from either starting point.
It is wise to allow 3–5 hours for a visit to the summit, although there is plenty to explore on the slopes of Saana if you wish to linger longer. Saana rises to 1,029 metres above sea level, while the village of Kilpisjärvi and the trailheads are already located at around 500 metres. This means the total ascent is just over 500 metres.
The route to Saana is suitable for hikers of almost all ages and fitness levels, provided you allow enough time, carry sufficient snacks and clothing, and set out in good weather. For families with small children, child carrier backpacks are available for rent from us.
Along the Saana trail, near the junction of the old and new routes close to the tree line, you will find the Saana hut and a dry toilet. The hut is an open rest spot for all hikers and firewood is available. Overnight stays in the hut are not permitted, but camping is allowed in the surrounding area in accordance with everyman’s rights. There is no waste service along the trail – please leave nothing behind on the fell and carry out everything you bring with you.

Saana’s old wooden steps were removed in 2017. At the same time, the route was realigned to prevent further erosion, and new granite steps were built in their place. The number of steps was reduced from over 700 to just 214. The new stairs can be slippery, especially in cold conditions, so extra caution is advised—particularly on the descent.
Saana is an almost year-round hiking destination. In winter, snowshoes and trekking poles are highly recommended and sometimes essential, and the hike requires experience and careful preparation. You can read more about winter conditions in our hiking stories: Conquering Saana in Winter.
Summer and the autumn foliage season are the most popular times to visit Saana. When the ground is snow-free, the trail is easier to walk, and in clear weather the summit offers wide views over Lake Kilpisjärvi, the fells of the Käsivarsi Wilderness, and toward Norway. During the ruska season, the landscape glows in autumn colours and the atmosphere is especially striking. We have gathered detailed tips on the best times, weather conditions, and seasonal differences in our comprehensive Saana hiking guide.
Tip! In summer, you can hike Saana even at night. During the Midnight Sun, there is plenty of light, and the fell is often at its most beautiful. In winter, the crisp cold in the village often turns noticeably milder at the summit—you can check the temperature difference on the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website.
